An X-ray automatically detects contaminants whose density differs from the product being inspected. The machines are highly sensitive, and even small variations in density can be detected and removed from the production line.

X-ray inspections detect unwanted contaminants such as metal, glass, ceramic, stone, and bone. Air bubbles, cracks, or other defects can also sometimes be detected.

X-ray machines are unable to detect materials that float on water, such as rubber, wood, insects and hair strands.

Metalized film packaging, such as chip bags or candy wrappers, and ready meals in foil trays are best suited for X-ray technology because of the metal contents. Products from farms that may contain stones or glass are also excellent candidates for X-ray inspection.

X-ray have a life span of around 5-10 years, with regular service.

CASSEL’s X-ray systems meet global safety standards to protect the machine operator. CASSEL’s X-rays do not use a radioactive source for the beam; instead, it is electronically generated and emits energy only when in operation.

The curtains protect against radiation, but they can cause issues for tall, slim products, such as bottles that may fall when pushed against them. The curtains are not strictly required, but if they are removed, there has to be other properly designed shielding and protective measures. For example, chicane systems or guards on the conveyor before and after the X-ray machine.
