An industrial metal detector ensures that your products are free from metal, providing quality control by detecting disruptions in a balanced electromagnetic field, which indicates the presence of metal contaminants. These contaminated products are then removed from the production line using one of our many sorting systems.

All types of metal are detectable, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals contain iron and have magnetic and conductive properties, making them easy to detect. Non-ferrous metals are conductive but not magnetic, which makes them slightly more difficult to detect. Examples of non-ferrous metals include copper, tin, lead, brass, and silver.

We offer a wide range of metal detectors, tailored to different industries and production environments. We have different metal detectors for free-falling products and liquid products transported through pipes. The most common type is the metal detector adapted for conveyor belts, which is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. It also doesn’t matter whether the product is packaged in plastic, cardboard, or glass jars, or filled with liquid.

With many search frequencies, the bar is raised for what is possible in detecting metal fragments in wet, conductive products.

It does not work to inspect packaged products that have foil packaging. In such cases, metal detection must be carried out before the product is packaged, or an X-ray system must be used instead.

Metal detectors are designed to detect metal contamination. If your products are at risk of containing glass, stones, plastic, or similar materials, you should consider using an X-ray system instead. The same applies if your packaging contains metal or if your quality policy requires you to check for contaminants beyond just metal.

Our partner is CASSEL Inspection in Germany, and we offer both their world-leading metal detectors and X-ray systems. After many years of working together, we know their equipment in and out. The metal detector requires no prior knowledge, and its user interface allows you to “see” how the detector behaves when setting up a new product, enabling you to choose the optimal settings to achieve the best sensitivity for detecting metal contamination and eliminating false alarms. All CASSEL metal detectors can also be remotely controlled for remote support.

All metal detection equipment must be tested regularly. For a valid sensitivity classification, a metal ball embedded in plastic with a diameter ranging from 0.3 mm to 10 mm is used. The ball must pass through the center of the metal detector, as the signal is weakest there. Ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, and stainless steel type 316 should all be tested. It is recommended to test the metal detector daily to ensure it is functioning correctly before production begins.

It depends. If the metal piece is magnetic, then even very small pieces can be detected, whereas non-magnetic metals can only be detected once they reach slightly larger sizes. The product being inspected also plays a role, for example, iron-rich spinach and salty raw fish can sometimes trigger metal detection due to high product conductivity. In such cases, the metal detector can be “trained” to recognize these products so that these effects are filtered out and not mistakenly classified as metal.

An industrial metal detector can last up to 20 years, with regular service.
